Teeth whitening can be carried out by your dental surgeon, who will use power whitening systems in the surgery and then a series of ‘at home’ treatments, or it is possible to solely use home whitening treatments.

Oliver Harman from the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists tells Maggie Philbin how teeth whitening involves trays (like gum shields) that are worn overnight with gel for 10-20 nights for the purpose of soaking up stains and bleaching the teeth.

He outlines the risks of the treatment and gives an indication of the costs involved.

He also discusses how teeth whitening can cause confusion - many people confuse cleaning with whitening.
